Harnessing ability for a greener future

By Josh Young, written for Suffolk Director Magazine

We see ‘ability’ as more than just a skillset – we view it as a capital asset and driver of sustainability and business growth. The renewable energy industry is evolving rapidly and harnessing ability has raised numerous challenges, but we’re confident that the launch of our new training academy will meet many of those challenges head-on.

Since we launched our renewable energy solutions company in 2012, as well as following our own green journey, Greenscape Energy has empowered businesses to achieve their sustainability goals, providing practical solutions, tailored advice, and ongoing support.

But our journey hasn’t been a smooth one – in an industry that’s relatively new and changing at pace, equipping our business with skilled professionals has proved challenging.

One major issue has been the rapid growth of the renewables sector, leading to a saturation of unskilled installers who don’t provide the ongoing support that is essential in making sure customers get the most out of their renewable energy systems.

Our training academy

To address our challenges, we’ve established a training academy to nurture ability at every level. The academy plays a crucial role in maintaining high product knowledge and consistent installation standards across all our teams. By delivering comprehensive internal training, we can ensure every installation meets the highest standards.

But the academy isn’t just an internal resource. It has been embraced by our commercial partners and suppliers for training, and hosting industry-related events such as breakfasts, talks, and presentations has fostered collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Also, by opening the academy to local educational institutions, we provide hands-on experience with sustainable products, inspiring the next generation of renewable energy professionals.

Accreditations and partnerships

Accreditations set a benchmark for skills and quality, acting as a trust factor for customers. While we’ve been around since 2012 and now have 140 employees and counting, in an industry historically marred by unskilled installers we must reassure customers that we’re proficient and well-trained; that we have the ‘ability’ to support them.

We see ability as a form of capital and a way to make a difference in any industry. To help cultivate it and face our industry challenges, we nurture not just technical skills, but also soft skills: the ability to learn and adapt, to train and mentor others, to communicate, innovate, and embrace teamwork. Even the gift of caring – something crucial in building customer relationships – is important.

A vision for the future

Our aim isn’t just to grow by cultivating ability within, but to expand ability across the industry as a whole. Our training academy is helping us do that and we hope it will also help us make a more meaningful impact on the environment.
