Solar panels should require little to no maintenance in theory. However some unfortunate Solar PV system owners are discovering that the sheltered space underneath the panels provides an ideal nesting spot for pigeons and other pests.
Sleepless nights are a common complaint for customers with a family of noisy birds living on their roof. Aside from the noise, the mess left by the birds is unpleasant, unhealthy, and can be costly.
Fouling is an inevitable consequence of birds nesting on your roof. Dirt and faeces left behind by the pigeons will begin to cover the surface of your solar panels, reducing the amount of electricity you will produce and therefore the amount that you will receive in Feed-In-Tariff payments.
Wire mesh is the most effective form of deterrent, stopping birds from getting underneath your panels and nesting. Once the birds realise they cannot get under the panels, they will be forced to leave your roof and find an alternate home.
Bird spikes can also be installed on the ridgeline of, or around the edge of your roof. These ‘anti-perch’ devices attempt to deter birds from landing in the first place.
Ultrasonic or bio-acoustic deterrents emit a high frequency sound which is meant to be inaudible to humans, to scares the birds off.
We do not recommend this option. In our experience these devices don’t always work. In some cases, the unpleasant ultrasonic sound be heard by young children, and the noise also disrupts bats, which are a protected species.
Greenscape Energy will send an experienced professional out to your property to safely and ethically deter the pests by fitting mesh which will stop the birds from nesting.
