Clivet Air Source Heat Pumps with Adia Thermal Control System
Clivet is Greenscape’s headline air source heat pump choice. Italian engineering with a dedicated UK headquarters, next-generation R290 refrigerant, variable-speed inverter compressor, and the only system in our range that integrates with the Adia Thermal Control System. Our typical Clivet + Adia install delivers a SCOP of ~4.6 (~460% efficiency), the best real-world efficiency available across our brand lineup.
We have tested heat pumps from over a dozen manufacturers across the past decade. Clivet is the brand we recommend by default for most homes because it delivers the strongest combination of engineering quality, real-world efficiency, smart-control integration, and value-for-money in 2026.

Why we recommend Clivet for most homes
-
1.Adia Thermal Control System is the headline differentiator
The Adia Thermal Control System pairs exclusively with Clivet heat pumps. It is the single biggest reason our Clivet installs outperform competitor-installed heat pumps on real-world efficiency.
Three things Adia Thermal does that other heat pump controls do not:
- Real-time SCOP visibility. Most heat pump manufacturers hide performance figures from end customers (there is usually a reason for that, the figures often disappoint). Adia Thermal displays live SCOP and historical SCOP in the app, so you know exactly how efficiently your system is performing day to day.
- Smart tariff integration with effective-SCOP boost. The system reads your tariff (Octopus Go, Octopus Intelligent, Cosy) and automatically schedules heat pump cycling and hot water heating around the cheapest electricity windows. The heat pump runs at a slightly lower SCOP during the boost (because it is delivering more heat than the home immediately needs), but the price difference between 27p peak and 8p off-peak more than makes up for it. The result is an effective SCOP (e-SCOP) that often exceeds the rated SCOP figure in pound-and-pence terms.
- Room-by-room scheduling. Set different setpoints for different rooms at different times. Bedrooms cooler overnight, lounge warmer evening, home office warmer 9am to 5pm. The Adia Thermal system pushes those schedules to a smart thermostat in each room and modulates compressor output to deliver them.

2.R290 refrigerant is future-proof
R290 (propane) is the lowest-GWP residential heat pump refrigerant on the UK market, with a Global Warming Potential of just 3 compared with 675 for the older R32 refrigerant or 2088 for the now-phasing-out R410A.
Future UK and EU regulations are tightening refrigerant rules under the F-Gas regulation review. Heat pumps using older high-GWP refrigerants face escalating refrigerant costs and potential phase-out from 2030 onwards. R290 sits well below all the regulatory thresholds, which means a Clivet install in 2026 is positioned for the next 20+ years of operation without refrigerant-related capital expenditure.
R290 also has a very low boiling point of -42°C, supporting strong cold-weather operation.
-
3.Variable-speed inverter compressor (not scroll)
This is non-negotiable for a high-SCOP install. A scroll compressor only runs at 100% or off, which means it short-cycles in mild weather (most of the UK heating season). A variable-speed inverter compressor modulates continuously between 0-100%, running at exactly the level needed to deliver the home’s current heat demand.
Industry SCOP averages for scroll-compressor budget heat pumps sit at around 3.0-3.5. Variable-speed inverter heat pumps (Clivet, Vaillant, Stiebel Eltron) achieve 4.0-5.0 in well-designed installs. The difference compounds across 20 years of operation into substantial pound-and-pence savings.

4.Italian engineering with UK headquarters support
Clivet is a major European HVAC manufacturer with decades of refrigeration and heat pump expertise across commercial and residential markets. The fact that they are European is a significant operational benefit for our customers: short supply chains, fast warranty response, English-speaking technical support, dedicated UK headquarters.
We have been installing Clivet for years and the support relationship has been consistently strong.

-
For most households we recommend Clivet as the default, because the combination of R290 refrigerant, variable-speed inverter compressor, Adia Thermal Control System integration, and 7-year warranty delivers the best balance of efficiency, value, and customer experience across our range.
-
We recommend Vaillant specifically when the customer has older radiators they do not want to upgrade (the Vaillant 75°C max flow temperature suits this) or when they have a particular preference for the Vaillant brand from their previous boiler.
-
We recommend Stiebel Eltron specifically for very large or technically complex properties, properties in particularly cold microclimates (the -25°C operating range is genuinely useful), or customers specifying premium German engineering above other considerations.

Common questions about Clivet
01 Why pick Clivet over Vaillant or Stiebel Eltron?
For most homes, Clivet delivers the best real-world efficiency at the lowest install cost. The Adia Thermal Control System integration is the largest single contributor to our typical SCOP 4.6 figure. Vaillant edges Clivet on max flow temperature (useful for some retrofits with very old radiators); Stiebel Eltron edges on premium engineering specification. For most properties neither of those edges matters more than the Clivet + Adia efficiency advantage.
02 Is Clivet a well-known brand?
In the residential market, less so than Vaillant or Stiebel Eltron, simply because Clivet has been more focused on commercial HVAC historically. In commercial heat pump and chiller markets, Clivet is a major European player with decades of track record. The residential range we install draws on the same engineering depth.
03 What is the warranty really?
7-year manufacturer warranty on the heat pump as standard with our MCS-certified install. Plus our 5-year workmanship guarantee on the install itself. Some Clivet models extend to 10-year manufacturer cover; we confirm warranty terms in writing on your bespoke proposal.
04 How does Adia Thermal integrate with smart tariffs?
The Adia Thermal Control System reads your tariff schedule (Octopus, British Gas, EDF, Ovo, and others), identifies the cheapest electricity windows (typically 12.30am-4.30am on Octopus Go, the four-hour off-peak slot on Intelligent), and automatically pre-heats the hot water cylinder and (in cold weather) the home itself during those cheap windows. The result is that a large portion of your heat pump’s annual consumption happens at 7-10p per kWh rather than 27p per kWh.
05 Will I notice the Adia Thermal Control System?
Yes, in good ways. You can see real-time efficiency, set room-by-room schedules from your phone, and watch the system pre-heat for cheap tariff windows automatically. Customers often describe it as the most polished smart-home system they have in their property.
06 Can Adia Thermal pair with my solar/battery?
Yes. If you have or are adding a Greenscape solar and battery setup, Adia Thermal coordinates heat pump cycling around your solar generation profile and battery state of charge. The result is the cheapest possible total-home running cost.
