Power your farm with low-cost, low-carbon electricity
With 13 years’ experience in the industry, Greenscape Energy are specialists in large-scale commercial solar panel systems for farms and agriculture. Interest among UK farmers has surged because solar PV provides freedom to generate and use their own electricity at a far lower cost than the grid, cut carbon, and future-proof their operations as equipment electrifies.
From barn rooftops to ground-mounted solar farms, we design, finance and install dependable systems that lower bills, increase resilience and create new income streams through export for farms across the UK.
How can harnessing the power of solar transform your farm?
Energy costs are one of the biggest and most unpredictable overheads for UK Farms. At the same time, customers, employees, and stakeholders are paying closer attention to how companies are reducing their carbon footprint.
1 / 7
Reduce Business Energy Costs
Farms are heavy electricity users (parlours, refrigeration, grain drying, ventilation, lighting). By generating your own electricity with commercial agricultural solar panels, your Farm can immediately cut costs and protect you from future price rises.
Unlock new revenue streams
Any surplus power can be sold back to the grid under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). It is possible to build a larger system primarily for export to create an additional, predictable income stream. Cheaper and more dependable energy can free capital for upgrades (e.g., cold stores, packing lines) or new ventures (e.g. unit lettings).
Strong Return on Investment (ROI)
Commercial agricultural solar is one of the most reliable investments available to UK farms. With installation costs more affordable than ever and electricity prices at record highs, most farms achieve payback in as little as 3 years, IRR commonly 14–18%, with 25+ years of free energy to follow.
Boost Sustainability & CSR Credentials
Installing solar PV demonstrates a clear commitment to sustainability, lowering your carbon footprint and supporting your journey towards Net Zero. This strengthens your corporate social responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) profiles improving performance in tenders and supply chain assessments. Commercial agricultural solar installations also improve EPC ratings to meet tightening Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES).
Tax Incentives for Farms
When investing in energy-efficient or low/zero-carbon technology, Farms can claim capital allowances and other tax benefits, helping reduce overall tax liability while investing in long-term energy security.
Long-Term, Low-Maintenance Investment
With lifespans of 25–30 years and minimal maintenance requirements, solar panels deliver reliable energy generation year after year, backed by strong manufacturer warranties.
Protection Against Rising Energy Costs
Commercial solar PV provides a stable, predictable supply of low-cost electricity. This helps farms hedge against volatile wholesale energy prices and plan with confidence for the future.

Funding & Finance Options For Farms
Choose the route that fits your business model:
Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)
Free solar for farms. We fund, own and maintain the system; you buy the electricity generated on your site at a discounted rate below your supplier’s price. Zero capex, immediate savings.
CapEx (purchase)
Own the asset from day one for maximum lifetime returns; common payback 3–5 years.
Asset finance
Spread the cost; in many cases the monthly savings exceed repayments, so projects can be cash-flow positive.
Lease
Fixed monthly payments with options to buy or upgrade at term end.

Ground-Mounted Solar For Agricultural Farmland
Where roof space is unsuitable or already in use, ground-mounted solar provides a practical and scalable alternative. By turning underutilised land into a reliable energy asset, farms can unlock additional capacity and long-term energy security.
Full Project Management
Greenscape takes care of everything: planning applications, ecological studies, grid connection approvals, civil works, and long-term maintenance. This ensures a smooth process from first design to energisation.
Designed Around Your Land
Each system is engineered to match soil conditions, ground profile, and farm layout. Flexible mounting options such as pile-driven or screw-anchored frames ensure stable, durable installations across varied terrain.
Scalable Capacity for Larger Farms
Unlike roof arrays, ground systems allow significant expansion, from mid-sized 100 kW projects to multi-megawatt installations; maximising self-consumption, export income, and compliance with future energy standards.
Supporting Nature and Biodiversity
Ground-mounted arrays can be laid out to encourage wildflower growth, pollinator habitats, and improved soil health, turning energy generation into an environmental benefit.
Low Impact Installation
Build methods are designed to minimise disturbance, with quick installation and the ability to maintain grazing or light agricultural use alongside the system.
Future Resilience
Ground-mounted solar makes better use of your land, reducing exposure to energy price volatility and supporting diversification of farm income for decades to come.
Frequently Asked Questions
01Can solar power all my farm equipment and facilities?
Yes. We size systems to your load profile, and many farms power parlours, refrigeration, grain drying, ventilation, lighting and offices. Battery storage can also cover evening peaks.
03How much land do I need for a ground-mounted solar system?
As a guide, ~1 acre can host up to ~1 MW (subject to layout, spacing and constraints). Smaller systems scale proportionally: e.g., 250 kW may need ~0.25 acre.
04How much electricity will my farm solar system generate?
As a rule of thumb: ~1,000 kWh per kW per year in much of the UK.
05Are agricultural solar panels eligible for government incentives?
Yes. You can receive payments for exported energy via the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) and may be able to claim capital allowances on qualifying equipment (speak to your accountant).
06What’s the payback period for farm solar?
Owned systems commonly pay back in 3–5 years depending on usage, tariffs and system size. With a PPA, there’s no upfront cost, you simply buy discounted onsite power from day one.
07Will solar disrupt farm operations?
We plan around cropping calendars and livestock movements. Most roof projects are completed with minimal disruption; ground-mount works are short, well-managed programmes.
08What maintenance is required?
Panels have no moving parts; routine inspections and periodic cleaning are usually sufficient. Inverters may need replacement once over the 25–30 year period. PPA projects include full O&M.
09Can I monitor performance?
Yes. You’ll get online monitoring to track generation, savings and CO₂ reductions, ideal for audits, ESG reporting and retailer compliance.
10Do you install nationwide?
Yes, although we’re proudly based in Suffolk, we deliver farm and agricultural solar projects across the UK, from 50 kW rooftops to multi-MW ground-mounts.
11Do I need planning permission?
Rooftop: In the vast majority of cases, no planning permission is required.
Ground-mounted: Planning is typically required; listed buildings, conservation/heritage sites may also require consent.
We manage the process end-to-end; preparing drawings, yield studies, ecology notes and responding to local authority queries to keep your project moving.

Had my Air Con installed today.. Could not fault the two installers who attended. . Arrived nice and early, took a look around outside and indoors no hesitation in starting work and confirming where I wanted the appliance. Shoes off each time they entered house and completed the tidy up after themselves. Remote and operation of A/C explained to me.. Good work, keep it up.

I've just had solar panels, battery and EV charger installed by Mark and Luke. They arrived a little early, did the job as quietly as possible with no fuss, and have finished much earlier than I'd expected. Mark then explained what's what, which I think I'll remember. Couldn't expect more.
Scaffolding subcontractor was similarly efficient putting the scaffolding up.
The back office and survey staff have been friendly and efficient too. It has been good to be able to visit the showroom office in Ipswich.
